Mrs. Juliette Tuakli - Child Inc.

 

After successful experience in setting up a multinational floricultural company in Ghana, Mrs. Tuakli recently brought together a group of medical practitioners to set up a medical clinic treating paedriatics, psychiatry, gynecology and general medicine issues. Proper medical assistance is difficult to get in Ghana and must be paid in cash. Tuakli works with expatriates that have insurance companies in the home countries reimbursing the costs of the visit. She wants to replicate the system and create an insurance system for local clients. She believes this will allow her to attend ther clients whenever it is needed as well as contribute to expand the business also. Mrs. Tuakli is seeking advice to plan this insurance system as well as an expansion plan.

 

AGRO-INDUSTRY - Organic dried lemon peels

Mr. Baidoo started in 2000 sellin dried orange and lemon peels and lemon grass in bulk. The products are solar dried and organic. Dried lemon's oil used in pharmaceutical industry and cosmetics. Lemon grass is used to flavour tea. Agro-industry is a sector with strong potential in Ghana, because of climate, land and water availability, and lack of contamination.

TextilePro is a textile company that was set up to manufacture socks that would be exported to the US and the EU - these regions don't tax or restrict (no quotas) textile imports from sub-Saharan African countries-. The business is going fine as Mr. Adabla is now providing to German and Californian companies. However, the factory is still not working at its full capacity. Mrs. Quartey-Papafio started her business importing cables. At one point she decided to start producing them herself and her company is nowadays one of the largest in Ghana.

Lanic Fibre Glass is one of the largest producers of fibre glass. They create molds which they use to produce dummys, washing basins and sinks, water tanks, etc. Business' turnover is around $180,000 but Mr. Lamptey wishes to expand to be able to take bigger orders and take advantage of business opportunities: sitting places for the stadiums that are being constructed for the African cup, fibre glass boats - there is a new legislation that limits tree cutting in Ghana, wood being the most widely used material for the construction of little boats -. Mr. Lamptey is looking for technical know-how and tips on administrative organization.

 

 

CONSUMER GOODS - Hair braids

Paulina Williams - Ninash Enterprises, ACCRA, GHANA

Paulina Williams is a professional hairdresser. She used to import plastic hair braids from Asia. In 1994 she decided that she would start producing braids by herself. Nowadays, she exports to UK, France, Canada, where she is one of the leading brand names. A few years ago, chinese products entered into the market under the brand name of Ninash, Auntie Lizzy. She is now working to reposition her enterprise as high quality manufacturer (she is now producing high and low quality wigs) and is considering the possibility of hiring a chinese manager to increase productivity. She wants to exchange thoughts with business people in her sector, to jointly explore possible collaboration avenues.

In 1992, Sambaolec was the first company to commercialize shito – a traditional pepper sauce in Ghana-. Mrs. Osafo-Ado entered a joint–venture agreement with an Austrian food processing company. It has now added on new products: ground nut paste, jams and marmalade, and a variety of fruit juices. She wishes to start large scale production in juice manufactruing. She is looking for counseling. Mrs. Osafo-Ado was proclaimed Business Woman of the Year by 2006 Africa Investor.

Thomas Wabi Bello has been producing a variety of vegetable oils for more than a decade, mainly from palm kernel and sunflower. He has more than 70 workers and his company is listed in the Ghana Stock Exchange since 2004. He wishes to improve the processing of the oil and concentrate in the production of soyabean. Mr. Djaba produces herbal based products: shampoo, conditioner, hair nourishing treatments, herbal medicated soap, cocoa butter soap and other products. Mr. Djava's production fails to meet the demand for his products, but his traditional production techniques prevent him from increasing output. Therefore, he seeks technical advice and training on how to be able to meet his goals and not be beaten by multinational companies that use more advanced technologies.
